@Glinner I’ll not use your terminology but this is sadly now true. One individual, whose failed quest to be an admin is legendary, is a shining example of the overreach.
I’m still a WP admin but I increasingly think the project has now had its time.
(I’ll probably be at WP:BN now..)

The WP project has been treading water for years.
“Consensus building” has long since gone from WP and with that came arbitrary viewpoints.
It’s time to let it go.

So, as it’s apt, the #PrincePhilip anecdote I have. Mid 60’s and and my late step grandfather is driving, late at night, through London. Pulled over by the police he’s asked to account for his evening. 1/

Gramps served with him in the Navy, and they were both rather fond of cards.
Needless to say, he drove with impunity through that particular part of London for the next 20 odd years until emigrating to Canada. 4/
