Imagine graduating from one of the best universities in the world
Only to be told there are no jobs for you
This was the problem 10,000s of graduating students faced in the UK last year
Many of them had outstanding qualifications
But the supply far outweighed the demand
This is the problem Maisie Roberts & Bertie Kinnings faced last year
Instead of sitting about hoping for a job opportunity to open
They upskilled, pivoted, went through bootcamps, and did internships
This led them to found Scran a TikTok-inspired app revolutionizing London’s dining scene.
They both found themselves finding trendy restaurants on Tiktok from young creators and wanted to democratize these finds so that these incredible restaurants would not just be limited to foodies but accessible to everyone
They decided that they would hire ‘Scranners’ to go out and rate restaurants which in turn would get ratings on the app (almost like Michelin but for GenZ. Not only focusing on just on food experience but aesthetic, food quality, sociability etc)
They went from a combined following on Instagram of 600 to putting themselves in front of the camera, telling their story and gaining 1000s online
Now both Maisie and Bertie have successfully found full time jobs on the side as they build their dream of Scran.
They are simultaneously revolutionalising the game building the app and marketing it at the same time
I recently interviewed Maisie and Bertie on my podcast Personable

Getting old is a luxury
I can recall as a young kid wanting to grow older every year
When I am 7 I can have my own bed
When I am 10 I can have a sleepover
When I am 13 can go to boarding school
The list goes on
Driving age, drinking age, go to college, get a job but at what point does this stop
It seems strange to only live to have less life moving forward
We all know the saying ‘you can only truly appreciate something when it is gone’ but it is only when loss happens to us that we realise how true this really is
As a young kid getting older is exciting but as an adult
When I am 50 I can no longer put on more muscle
When I am 60 my body has more wrinkles
When I am 70 I will have less movement than I had before
To some extent these are limiting beliefs but at the same time they do ring true
So how can the young kid wishing their life away and the older person wishing for their life back both be wrong at the same time
The answer lies in gratitude
I went for a walk with my mum a few weeks before she died along the beach
We saw an older couple walking past
And she said to me ‘Harvey, it is an honour to get older. To grow old is one of the best gifts life can give you’
My instant internal reaction was to say ‘Nonsense, why would anyone want to lose the colour of their hair, find it harder to run around or bounce back from injuries’
Then I looked at my mum
Realising that she didn’t have that choice
Looking into her eyes did not reveal regret or wishing to do the things that she had never done
Rather it was gratitude. She woke up everyday in awe of the family she had built, and the nature around her - the sea, the sand, the bees, the trees, and all things seemed worth living for
Change is the constant in this world. We can hope for tomorrow or for things to go back to how they used to be
But that makes it easy to forget just how good we have it
Right now
The air we breath, the grass we walk on and the memories we make today
Will one day be the moments that we will look back on as the best parts of our lives
This is your reminder to grow and to push but also to remember to appreciate life as it comes before it is gone
