@MichealMartinTD when your term as president of Palestine ends would you think of running for Taoiseach of Ireland in a role where you could represent d interests of our island on d world stage? Im sure ur experience as d head of a Middle Eastern 'state' would be most beneficial!
@MichealLehane@rtenews u get one trump question and u think maybe the ongoing war in europe or you know anything related to Ireland might be more important that some distant middle east issue? maybe its time u and rte move beyond university level politics/journalism!
@rtenews hey rte could u make ur potus presenters aware that there is a war in Europe at the moment with far more atrocities vs anything going on in the distant middle east! That perhaps should be a priority topic with the presidents! 🤷♀️
@MichealMartinTD@SimonHarrisTD this is communism! #gettotowers how can citizens out bid the lda?! They need to be reigned in and their mandate reduced
LDA agrees to buy what will be Ireland’s tallest building

The VAT rate was cut for restaurants in July. Today we learn that prices did not fall as a result. They remained unchanged on June. This suggests that most of the cut went straight to boosting profits, as anyone with Econ 101 would have predicted.
It is rare to see a government do something so politically AND economically stupid.
On the politics, caving in to the industry’s lobbying meant no indexation of personal tax in Budget 2026. In plain language, a tax increase for all workers was imposed to give a tax cut to one industry. Not a vote winner, particularly at a time when state coffers are overflowing and their is widespread perception that money is being wasted at scale.
Economically, there is no problem to solve in the restaurant sector. Even if there was, it is not strategically significant, so it does not warrant special treatment. It is also a low pay sector.
Dumb and dumber.
@FlogasIreland I am on a flogas fixed rate tariff at d mo and was wondering could i switch that to a new 12 month contract with the smart ev night charge plan? Without penalty?
CHART OF THE DAY: On Apr 16, the IEA made a headline-grabbing warning: Europe had "maybe 6 weeks or so of jet fuel left." It's week seven; the planes are still flying. Since those headlines, European wholesale jet fuel prices have fallen ~30% to a ~3-month low.
@thecurrency The irish times has turned into a left wing opinion piece rag, the rte of news papers, alienating its core reader. Id say its closer to its peak digital subscription rate!
More than oil, the chart below is crucial for the ECB / BoE. The cost of natural gas (and with it, electricity) is back to pre-war levels; lower than it was in 1Q 2025.
Irish investors are being punished for doing the right thing. Invest in a simple ETF? The State slaps you with 38% tax after 8 years on gains you haven’t even realised. Tax on money you never received. It has to change.
Wow. Shocked by the national broadcaster, including journalists I hugely respect.
Whatever you thinks about singing festivals, RTE management was in a small minority in Europe on Isreal ban. Nightly news and Primetime platform voices supporting that position. No questioning. That’s not good journalism. Get real folks.
@podonovan what gives RTE the right to make politically motivated broadcast decisions? As a state broadcaster they should be wholly impartial with no political bias. Instead they have become a far left union mouthpiece focussed on employee self enrichment and should be shut down
The irish times opinion section, which seems to be most of the paper these days, has been full of left wing head bangers for a while now and so should be ignored too!
This is akin to right wingers saying anything supported by Soros should be ignored.
Opinions of people of influence matter. Ignoring them is to pull on the green jersey and put one's head in the sand.
@SimonHarrisTD@Paschald why do u continually court/reward those who are not working at a time of 0 unemployment, when they will be voting for sf/pbp anyway? This country desperately needs a party to represent those “who get up early in the morning”, as its no longer u.
@rtenews@rte could you please show me where you are covering this news: https://t.co/0BVzAwiEqb
Your coverage of d oct 7th anniversary below ur story of some attention seeking hipster socialists on a boat is also pretty damning.
@Paschald your legacy will be a massively unsustainable welfare state, at a time of one off high revenues and very low employment, where the main economic consequence is high inflation and bar tax, an uncompetitive workforce! Prudent you are not.
@Paschald i did not vote for you to have cheaper restaurants! What a complete waste of this year‘s budget. Are you trying not to get re-elected? Reduce income tax so people can afford restaurants makes more sense.
