Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and Oracle spent close to half a trillion dollars on capital projects in 2025, and on trend will spend around three-quarters of a trillion in 2026. One company’s capital spending is another company’s order book. Every dollar of it lands, sooner or later, on a chipmaker, a transformer factory, a cable plant or a construction crew.
Follow a single $100 of that spending and the order books come into view. Half buys chips, and inside the chips about $8 flows on to the machines that make them. Fifteen dollars buys networking, twenty buys power, and the rest goes on cooling, buildings and land. The chips take the headlines. The twenty dollars of power is the share with the longest lead times.
Bain’s GLOBAL base case implies ~149 GW of net data-center IT capacity added through 2030, with annual additions rising from ~20 GW in 2026 to 36 GW in 2029–30. Reminder, US is something on the order of 50-67% of adds and might be disproportionately higher in the near-term as it can build capacity faster than ROW ex-China.
Implied annual additions from its chart, 2026/27/28/29/30, rounded:
>Low: 19/21/23/23/23 GW
>Base: 20/25/32/36/36 GW
>High: 24/33/38/43/45 GW
That takes global installed capacity from 79.2 GW in 2025 to:
>Low: 188 GW in 2030
>Base: 228 GW
>High: 262 GW
Bain estimates $5-6.5T of base-case buildout spending. Its other forecasts, 2023→2030:
>Electricity demand: 388→1,228 TWh
>Cooling revenue: $7.9→$28.4B, excluding China
>GPU/ASIC shipments: 3.9→38.6M
Capacity includes conventional workloads. Net additions exclude GPU refresh, retrofit and replacement of retired capacity.
Cuts I’d like to see: annual additions by region; training vs inference; GPU vs ASIC; spending including refresh; and energized vs contracted/proposed capacity.

power is hard to get for data centers because it takes a long time. even northern virginia, the world's largest data center market, can't get power fast enough. it takes a 100 MW data center 7 years to connect to the grid
I think this pushes companies to be more creative about getting power. my favorite example is @RedwoodMat
- @CrusoeAI using gas that oil fields would otherwise burn
- @spacexai bringing gas turbines to its Memphis data center
- @Microsoft paying to bring back three mile island (a closed nuclear plant)
- @IREN_Ltd turning powered sites for bitcoin mining to AI data centers
and finally, @RedwoodMat in nevada. they use old EV batteries and use them for modular data centers. many are actually not good enough for cars but still can store energy. they used these with solar power to power 4 @CrusoeAI modular data centers (and now are expanding to 24)
modular data centers are hard to do but are the future. you can bring the data center to where power is already available without waiting for grid connection!
