A great example of the team effort it takes to get a military aircraft ready for operations. In this (staged) photo, 38 representative support staff and 7 aircrew line up in front of this Avro Lancaster bomber, in 1943. This would be replicated for every aircraft on the station.

France, June 1940. A Luftwaffe mechanic repairing a Fieseler Fi 156 Storch observation aircraft, that made an emergency landing in a field. The mechanic is standing on an ex-British Army BSA M20 motorcycle, presumably left by retreating members of the BEF, en-route to Dunkirk.

A sad scene from RAF Abingdon...taken 30 years ago!
In the late 1970's Britain decided it would build its own AEW platform, using the tried and tested HS Nimrod aircraft. Six years later and at a cost of £1 billion, the project was scrapped. Alas, no lessons were learned either!

A lovely formation shot of Royal Navy Supermarine Walrus aircraft, all based at RNAS Arbroath (in Angus, Scotland), known at the time as HMS Condor. Many people will not know that the Walrus was the work of Spitfire designer R. J. Mitchell...despite the disparity in looks! 🥴
