Earlier today I saw a European Starling near the UConn cemetery. Starlings are considered invasive due to their ability to outcompete native species for nest sites. Proper management of starlings should be promoted to maintain natural species diversity in the region #birdclass

This morning at 7 AM on Tower Court in Storrs, I saw a female turkey foraging along the road. April is ideal breeding time for turkeys in Connecticut, so the female was likely foraging to gather the energy to lay fertilized eggs #birdclass

On a run along discovery drive I saw 2 Mourning Doves feeding together Ali g the road. Seeds make up 99% of their diet, making edge habitat suitable for their feeding behavior. They are also monogamous, so these 2 may have been a mating pair #birdclass

Earlier today I saw a crow while walking near C Lot. Crows have been shown to have vocalizations that are distinguishable, allowing for the species to identify particular individuals within their complex social structures #birdclass

While on spring break in the Great Smoky Mountains (Waynesville, NC), I spotted this bird (I think a Dark-eyed Junco) searching for nuts on the ground at the highest peak on our hike. It has a sharp beak, essential for external maceration of hard nuts. #birdclass

Today, I saw a crow perched on top of BPB while walking around campus. Crows are predators and scavengers, so it may have been hunting for food after this snow and rain filled morning #birdclass

Yesterday I saw a turkey vulture soaring over campus near the cemetery around noon. They produce very few wingbeats in flight, and often fly low to the ground to search for carcasses. #birdclass

Leaving my apartment in Storrs to participate in Huskython and I saw this bird. Got a little too close and accidentally spooked it. It had large wings that allowed for rapid lift from its perch on top of the basketball hoop. #TweetID #birdclass

While parking in the South Garage on UConn’s campus I saw a house sparrow fly to its nest on the 3rd floor. House Sparrows are non-native to Connecticut and are exceptional at outcompeting other species due to their aggressive behavior and nesting patterns #birdclass

Saw a great blue heron flying overhead at Eagleville Dam, their S-shaped head and colorful plumage make them easy to identify in flight #birdclass

Little throwback to this past summer working as a biology intern with the Fish & Wildlife Service on Long Island. We caught this Saltmarsh Sparrow while mist netting, a species that is experiencing massive population declines due to habitat loss and sea level rise #birdclass
