Mrs Norris does not seem thrilled to see Sir Thomas being so generous to Franny and William with his wealth in chapter 37, it seems like there is a continuing theme of Mrs Norris motivated by wealth.
I think that when lady bertram complains about being without Franny In chapter 37, its feels like Austen's making fun of how she doesn't actually need Franny for anything more than somebody to hangout with. Lady Bertram will be perfectly fine on her ow perfectly fine on her own.
I feel like Henry doesn't really know when to quit, like she already has rejected the proposal yet Henry persist that she marry him. I feel like in the other books we have read, when the guys get rejected they all sort of give up chasing the girl, but Henrys persistence makes me
I feel like Franny and Mary don't get along completely because Marys morals rely on the affection of men unlike Franny's. For example at the ball Franny didn't really care that Henry was making advances but Mary tried to point them out to franny and make them obvious to her.
Mrs. Norris seems to always be looking down on Franny And Sir Thomas has been constantly having her back. for example at the ball when Mrs . Norris is mean to Franny about her appearance but then Sir Thomas has Franny and Henry dance first to open the ball.
Mrs Norris tries to keep the spotlight off Franny by suggesting the ball happen when Maria and Julia get back and make the ball in honor of them since they are from a respectable class but Sir Thomas backs the idea of having the ball to see Franny dance. The female characters in
When William gives Franny the gold cross with no chain I kinda assumed that surely one of the ultra rich people would have an extra that Franny could borrow, but it seems that Franny doesn't want to accept it when Mary offers. Is this possibly an ego issue.
@EmmaOwen27 I find it interesting that we as readers know what Henrys true intentions are but franny doesn't. I feel like Austen wants us to know that Henry is only flirting with her for his own amusement.
The class dynamics between Franny and Lady Bertram are a little surprising to me. I find it unusual that sir Thomas and Lady Bertram bring her into the estate only to treat her like she doesn't belong. in chapter 23 we see sir Thomas who had been strict on class distinctions
@HaileyL2024 Ithink that edmund has a habit of always making good decisions. It makes sense if franny would trust in him when she may not know the answer.
@kaylynliv@krank_zoe I agree I think that Austen has introduced edmund as somebody who wont stray from the moral path but now that he has franny along with us as a reader have to find some other voice of reason.
pg 169 "It will be very disagreeable and by no means what I expected" its very interesting to see the the shift in motivation when they start bringing villagers and common people. The concern of the production staying within the social circle is an interesting choice from Austen.
