British supermarket chain the Co-op is cutting ties with Israel in a major win for the BDS movement, and will remove Israeli products from its shelves from this month.

Palestine Solidarity Campaign director Ben Jamal called it a “seismic victory” and said: “The Co-op has shown great moral courage and ethical principle in deciding that it cannot ignore voices from the British public calling out Israel’s gross human rights abuses and violations of international law – and even more importantly, it cannot economically support that regime through doing business in Israel.

“This beacon of leadership must now be taken up by all other supermarket chains which continue to sell Israeli goods, despite knowing they are supporting its war crimes.”

The Co-op will also cease sourcing products and services from 16 other countries where there are internationally recognised community-wide human rights abuses and violations of international law, including Afghanistan, Belarus, Central African Republic, North Korea, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Haiti, Iran, Libya, Mali, Myanmar, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
