Etruscan gold pendant depicting the head of the river god Achelous. (c.480 BC) Currently located in The Louvre.
This deity was worshipped as the patron of the largest fresh water river in Greece, also known as the Achelous. He once competed with Heracles for the hand of Deianeira, and in the ensuing wrestling match Heracles tore off the god’s horn, which was subsequently fashioned into the cornucopia (horn of plenty). In other versions of the myth, Achelous was only able to retrieve his lost appendage once he had procured the horn of Amaltheia for Heracles.
He is sometimes named as the father of the Sirens.
