@FreshVoicesUK@redrumlisa@SlothBracelet The Skelmanthorpe banner, made in 1819, calls for universal suffrage, liberty, justice for the victims of Peterloo, and the abolition of slavery (for more details, see https://t.co/e1wsPLPEAq)
Today in 1819, working people in Manchester gathered peacefully to demand the right to vote. The authorities sent the troops in & 18 people were killed. This event reminds us that every right we have was fought for.
In Manchester today commemorating the Peterloo massacre.
@MikeMcClur69771 The only shooting occurred that evening, during a protest about the massacre but several hours later. The yeomanry (private militia) and the army were wielding sabres, so most of the damage was done by those, or the horses, or just the press of people trying to escape them.
@wrkclasshistory I was at the commemoration today at the Peterloo Memorial in Manchester; proud to have read out a name of one of the victims - Thomas Ashton, a special constable killed by so-called 'friendly fire' - cut down by a fellow constable's sabre then trampled to death.
206 years ago today, the Peterloo Massacre took place at St Peter’s Field, Manchester. Among the killed and injured were brave Salfordians like Sarah Jones. We remember them and their fight to give future generations a voice in politics.
Wonderful local banner made in commemoration of Peterloo massacre and those who gave their all. Carried as we walked the same path as those folk 200 years later in 2019.
A stunning tapestry hung in the arches today for the #Peterloo Musical, marking the anniversary of the massacre, right on the spot where it unfolded.
Tickets left for 8pm…💙💜
