📍 Day Two Highlights : Use of AI to Strengthen Ethical Journalism and Civic Media Training in Tanzania.

As Project Lead and Core Facilitator, Bonface Witaba led the hands-on practical sessions on Generative AI, translating theory into real-world application. Participants were divided into Journalism and CSO clusters, where they worked collaboratively to develop responsible AI guidelines, draft AI-assisted proposals, create visual communication materials, and tackle AI-powered verification and fact-checking exercises.

The sessions concluded with group presentations, showcasing participants’ ability to apply AI ethically and effectively in their respective fields.

On day one, our onsite project coordinator, Tatu Mbamba, guided the team and participants toward achieving the project’s objectives, while emphasizing the importance of collaboration. The session also included contributions from the project lead, Bonface Witaba, and workshop facilitator, James Chitemo, who reinforced key learning points and facilitated engagement. Tatu, further emphasized the need to extend Ethical AI Training to underserved regions, particularly in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands, starting with Iringa, Njombe, and Mbeya.

Our Senior Researcher, Bonface Witaba, led an insightful session on “A Brief History of Artificial Intelligence,” covering the evolution of AI, the pioneers behind its development, machine learning concepts, different types of machine learning, and the ethical considerations that should guide AI innovation.

The training continued with an engaging session on the role of AI in journalism, where participants explored the opportunities and risks of AI tools and worked collaboratively to identify AI’s strengths, weaknesses, and the editorial checks needed to ensure responsible and ethical use.
