During my time as the Students’ Union Senate President, I learned many lessons and I saw things from different perspectives. Let me share this story:

There was this comrade; loud, articulate, and a passionate critic of everything the Students’ Union did. According to him, we never got it right. Every memo we released after meetings with the university management was met with his fiery counter statements. In his eyes, our negotiations lacked value. He often suggested that we should stare down the Vice Chancellor, bang tables, and walk out if we didn’t get 100% of our demands.

I tried reasoning with him several times, explaining that advocacy doesn’t work that way. There are protocols, institutional limits, and strategic compromises that yield results. But he wouldn’t listen. To him, anything short of a total win was failure.

So, I decided to try something different.

One day, ahead of another high stake meeting with university management, I invited him to join our delegation. I figured: if he believed he could do better, let him experience the process himself. He agreed to come along.

From the moment we stepped into the Senate Building, it was clear his priorities were different. He was more interested in making videos of the surroundings. By the time we were waiting in the VC’s office waiting room, he had taken over 50 photos of himself in various poses. I’m not even exaggerating.

When we finally entered the meeting, I waited to see his fire, his passion, his “bang the table” energy. Instead, he went utterly silent. Not a word. No table banging. No fierce confrontations. He just sat quietly, visibly eager for the meeting to end so he could take a selfie with the Vice Chancellor and post it online.

After that day, something changed. His criticism faded. He had been humbled not by confrontation, but by experience.

Sometimes, the loudest voices aren’t disagreeing because you’re doing it wrong. They just wish they were the ones in your shoes. Leadership will always attract criticism but it’s not always about your methods. Often, it’s about position, access, and the spotlight they wish they had.

You will never understand this until you witness the calamity that can happen to those who don’t have any/all of the above.
