Buried in Moscow for 37 Years Before Returning Home.

​After suffering a severe stroke in 1968, Kotane moved to Moscow for specialised medical treatment, where he passed away on May 19, 1978.

He was buried in Moscow’s prestigious Novodevichy Cemetery, a resting place reserved for notable global political figureheads and artists. In March 2015, 37 years after his death, his remains (along with fellow hero J.B. Marks) were exhumed and repatriated to South Africa, where he received a official state funeral and was reburied in his hometown of Pella, North West.
