How does war impact moral foundations and parochial altruism? A thread 🧵 (1/6)
@NAChristakis "We present the results of a meta-analysis of all empirical studies on the effects of these warnings. Overall, we found that warnings had no effect on affective responses to negative material[...]. However, warnings reliably increased anticipatory affect." https://t.co/M2UOTMSuFa
@HPluckrose@KonstantinKisin I think the key here is the trend, rather than the absolute numbers. Religiosity is steadily declining, even in the religious US. It is the shift in norms with resulting threat of anomie that produces the vacuum filled by critical theories.
@PippaN15 What if the statement had been framed to appeal to liberal rather than conservative fears, e.g. "Our lives are threatened by white supremacists, climate change, and neoliberal policies, and our priority should be to protect ourselves"?

How do we explain this? 🤔 Here are a few possibilities:
1) Minority status shapes moral adaptation.
2) House destruction triggers vulnerability, shifting individual morality towards ingroup bias.
3) A fallback to local cultural norms and institutions as an adaptive response.

Insightful substack by @JonHaidt. My two cents: cultural systems (ideologies, religions) "think", and we think with them. They may encode a group's ethos, but also psychopathological modes of extended cognition. Social media has changed how this interaction occurs.
There was no sign of a teen mental illness epidemic until around 2012. Then liberal girls' rates started increasing. Then everyone else. Why? @glukianoff nailed it: Reverse CBT, as I explain here:

Moderates like extremists… on their side.
Political polarization is driven by homophily, we like people with similar views. But we also tend to acrophily, liking more extreme views than ours. This boosts polarization, driving a wedge between moderates. https://t.co/m7BHk0Uvu2
Bird Brains
🐦 Some birds are as smart as monkeys or apes
🐦 Because their neurons are smaller, some have many more neurons than same-sized mammals
🐦 Birds have neurons that represent what they perceive – a tell-tale sign of consciousness
