Smotrich isn’t “islamophobic”. He’s wanted for war crimes. And the New York State Attorney General was marching with him in a parade that celebrated his political project.
The idea is to find a group of people most people regard as terrible examples, use them to make revoking passports a more acceptable form of punishment, then expand it from there.
The severity of the collapse was related to how relatively well distributed wealth was under the Soviets. When the oligarchs seized it all, that plunged people into poverty. The good news for the U.S. is that we are already extremely unequal, with the top 10% of earners responsible for roughly half or more of all consumption. That obviously can get much worse though. And if we are much poorer, it starts to get very ugly.
The collapse of the Soviet Union saw the greatest peace time reduction in life expectancy and standard of living of any major human population ever. Just an fyi.
Yes, this is a win. A tax on ultra-wealthy second homes is a step in the right direction.
But it’s also a perfect example of what frustrates so many of us about moderate Democrats like Kathy Hochul. Even in a moment where inequality is out of control, they default to the smallest, safest version of change.
We’re talking about a system where billionaires hoard unimaginable wealth while working people struggle to survive. And now, with figures tied to cases like Jeffrey Epstein exposing just how corrupt and untouchable parts of that elite class can be, the urgency for real accountability should be undeniable.
Yet instead of bold, transformative policy, we keep getting incremental tweaks.
That’s the core issue. The goal of left politics isn’t to slightly adjust a broken system, it’s to fundamentally change it.
When leaders slow-walk progress or settle for the bare minimum, they’re not just being cautious, they’re maintaining a system that continues to benefit the same wealthy class at the top.
Meanwhile, Republicans push their agenda aggressively and without hesitation. Whether people agree with them or not, they fight for maximum outcomes. On our side, we’re constantly told to celebrate crumbs.
I’m not dismissing this win. But I’m tired of being told incremental change is enough when the scale of the problem demands far more.
Abdul El-Sayed: “If you’re out of a job, it’s probably because a corporation figured out how to automate your job. If you’re out of a home, it’s probably because a corporation is speculating on the home that you should have been able to afford. If you’re out of healthcare, it’s probably because a corporation has figured out how to monetize you because you get sick”
It’s not leftist fault that Democrats couldn’t convince a country that reads at a 6th grade level to vote for them lol and we need to stop pretending it is
colleges had IDF members straight up on campus assaulting and using chemical weapons on 18 year olds and the democrats were like "it's possible that 18 year old girl was funded by iran" and I am not exaggerating in the slightest. IU had snipers on the rooftops around the quad
Because the worse Trump is, the better they think they can do in the polls without having to actually listen to their constituents and advocate for more progressive policies.
Theoretically y’all little Black billionaires could be solving this whole ass problem by puttin together armies of lawyers to service these cases pro-bono and pressuring local govs, providing housing and relief for defrauded residents, etc. but alas
