Great to chat with @mark_murphy890 about my career in radio so far.
I was thinking about this particular memory a lot ahead of the Radio City 50th celebration.
A defining one for me.
The Conservative Party has had:
The first Jewish leader (1868)
The first female leader (1975)
A (probably) gay leader (1965)
The first Asian leader (2022)
The first black leader (2024)
Are there any glass ceilings left?
@ladyhaja@Sathnam This is the main point for me. Just not having to watch and listen to right wing in-fighting every day will give me a genuine mental health boost
@Knox_Harrington Ah, then I’ve misunderstood and we’re talking at cross purposes! Media reform is desperately needed, but equally I’ve no real idea where it comes from, I’m not aware that any party has anything to say on it. Equally, see reform of the Lords.
@Knox_Harrington And from the average voter’s perspective, someone who wants to embrace liberal or socialist values, where do you go? Possibly Lib Dem, possibly Greens, but both have flaws just as big as Labour when you scratch the surface
@Knox_Harrington I’d love huge structural change, a total shift to socialist values. But it’s pure fantasy to think the country is up for that now even if we both are and most people we both know are. But a Labour govt will make things a bit better for vulnerable people and that’s a good thing
@PhilBlundell Couldn’t agree with this more. I’ve no doubt life will get a bit better for ordinary people under Labour and Starmer. Perfect? Definitely not, but better.
Happy Birthday to @IronMenCrosby
19 years ago today Antony Gormley officially launched Another Place, his artwork of 100 iron men along Crosby beach. I have been photographing them ever since.
@PlayNicelyNow@lewis_goodall Yes! This would be so much better. These debates teach the average viewer absolutely nothing, especially when they’ve been briefed just to deliver soundbites regardless of the question asked
@StevenSaul Are you finding this with fintech type businesses? They often seem to think being able to get hold of them in a traditional phone/email way is somehow 'old-fashioned.'
@chrisgreybrexit If he’s good at destroying things, who’s the person he could team up with/eventually be replaced by that might be good at building something from the rubble? A current player? Or someone who the country hasn’t met yet? That’s the person to look out for.
