Citing a 12% drop in SNAP enrollment as proof that "children are going hungry" is dicto simpliciter — applying a general statistic to a specific emotional conclusion while ignoring the actual reason for the exception. The drop did not happen because USDA workers started confiscating sandwiches. It happened because work requirements shifted, waiver rules tightened for high-unemployment counties, and states now have to actually verify who is eligible instead of running the program on the honor system. That is not "the federal government abandoning Americans." That is the federal government checking a receipt before handing you the register.

Pairing that stat with a photograph, instead of a chart, is argumentum ad misericordiam — appeal to pity. It's meant to make people FEEL the number instead of THINK about it, because the moment people start thinking, they ask uncomfortable questions like "wait, does a 12% enrollment drop actually equal a 12% increase in hunger?" It doesn't. Enrollment and need are not the same variable, Congressman, and I say that as someone who actually teaches Physics, where correlation causing conclusions gets you a failing grade on the lab report.

Here's what the bill actually preserves: full exemptions for seniors, the disabled, pregnant women, veterans, the homeless, and parents of young children. What it removes is the assumption that a working-age, able-bodied adult with no dependents is permanently entitled to a benefit with zero participation required. Funny thing about hunger, Congressman — your own party just spent over a month blocking a clean CR, holding the entire government hostage over COVID-era ACA subsidies, while lecturing me about compassion. If food insecurity was truly the five-alarm emergency you are describing today, perhaps don't manufacture a shutdown over premium subsidies while cameras are rolling. Quinn's Law #6: facts are the enemy of liberalism, which is why the photo shows up and the USDA methodology doesn't.

And since the 45 Communist Goals read into the Congressional Record on January 10, 1963 keep aging like a fine merlot — Goal #32 called for supporting any movement to centralize control over parts of the culture through dependency. Building a program that grows precisely when accountability shrinks isn't a bug. It's a business model.

Speaking of accountability, Congressman, since you're so worried about the "unwillingness" of the federal government to protect these programs, let's discuss what the willingness to look the other way has already cost taxpayers. USDA's own Inspector General had to replace $322 MILLION in stolen SNAP benefits between October 2022 and December 2024 because the EBT security standards were, charitably, a screen door on a submarine. A Minnesota nonprofit called Feeding Our Future claimed to have served up to 125 million meals that never existed, pocketed roughly $250 million, and its founder is now serving 500 months in federal prison. A Missouri nonprofit director stole $19.7 million meant for afterschool meals and spent it on a $200,000 Mercedes. An Illinois store owner trafficked $8.9 million in SNAP and WIC benefits. A USDA employee in New York sold system access to enable a $66 million trafficking ring. Two Romanian nationals ran EBT skimming operations across multiple states and moved $760,000 in stolen benefits through warehouse clubs for resale.

That is not a typo-riddled rounding error, Congressman. That is nine figures of documented, prosecuted theft from a program you are currently arguing needs LESS oversight, not more. Requiring citizenship verification and actual work documentation isn't cruelty. It is the bare minimum anyone would demand of literally any other government expenditure, and the only reason it sounds radical is that you have spent years insisting the honor system was working just fine.

But what do I know? I'm only someone who actually read the bill text instead of a caption under a stock photo.
