A masterpiece… that caused a riot. 👀🎶
On this day in 1913, Igor Stravinsky’s then-controversial The Rite of Spring premiered in Paris, prompting boos, jeers, and uproar from the audience. Today, it’s celebrated as one of the most groundbreaking and beloved works in orchestral history.
Fun fact: the rhythm and harmonies were so shocking at the time that the dancers reportedly couldn’t hear the orchestra over the noise from the crowd!
Enjoy this filmed performance extract, led by Conductor Laureate @esapekkasalonen.
