@EvansRyan202 Civil War Supply and Strategy by Earl Hess. Published 2020. Logistics is an underappreciated aspect of the Civil War and Hess does a great job of connecting it to how the war was fought.
@UticaEric @zenpundit When I figured out we were winning most gunfights and still losing the war I switched to reading almost entirely strategy books. That was 8 years ago. Still reading, still searching, still losing… Better for my next war I hope.
@APJ_somewhere Excellent book. Tough to compress into a tweet but basically DOD values the combat roles more and the FAOs don’t usually get a seat at the table. “Diplomacy is State’s job” goes the argument I’ve heard. I love FAO but some I’ve encountered believe it’s a distraction to DOD.
@APJ_somewhere Tell them about Edward Landsdale. Great FAO story. Also tell them that the DOD doesn’t like FAOs and they should get used to operating alone and in the grey.
@JimLaPorta Thank you for posting. I’ve been waiting all day for this one. After he was killed I flew him from Afghanistan to Dover to Colorado. He was buried at USAFA. A truly phenomenal human being I was lucky to call my friend.
@McCainJack I was an AFPAK Hand from 12-17. Loved it. It was not for everyone one but it was for me. I managed to survive five years outside my “core” career field but only by sheer luck and some GO protection.
@UVAnthonyCSCS Pure speculation, but I would suspect Ktah Khas. I interacted briefly with them a few years back. They were a cut above even the normal commando units I saw.
