23 Mar 1917 // Destroyer HMS Laforey sank after striking a (British) mine off Shoreham-by-Sea. The explosion amidships broke the ship in half, the bow section sinking immediately and the stern shortly afterwards. From 76 on board only 18 survived. #RoyalNavy #WW1

23 Mar 1922 // HM Submarine H42 was rammed and sunk by destroyer HMS Versatile during exercises off Gibraltar. The submarine had surfaced unexpectedly in the destroyer's path. H42 was almost cut in half and sank with all hands (26 officers and men). #RoyalNavy

21 Mar 1804 // Brig sloop HMS Wolverine (ex collier Rattler, bought by #RoyalNavy 1798) was captured by French privateer Blonde in the North Atlantic while protecting her Newfoundland convoy. She lost six men killed and sank within a few minutes of capture. (Image @RMGreenwich)

20 Mar 1942 // Destroyer HMS Heythrop was torpedoed and sunk off Libya by German submarine U-652, with no loss of life. She was taken in tow but abandoned when her pumps were overwhelmed. Before Heythrop sank all on board were taken off by HMS Eridge. #RoyalNavy #WW2

Whilst David Wanklyn’s exploits are fairly well known on here, George Hunt gets somewhat of an ignoring. During his time as captain of HMS Ultor, Hunt achieved the record of sinking the highest number of ships by a British sub during the war. 30 vessels in total(!)
