Fynbos Buttonquail (Turnix hottentottus) is one the hardest #fynbos #endemic bird to spot (or at least get a good sighting of). Here we had the camera ready when we flushed it, but even then it was hard to track and only fleeting. #birding

100 years since it was first discovered, #Brunia pillansii has been refound at Maanschynkop by Dr Chris Whitehouse. The species was collected before by Stokoe in 1920 and had not been seen since so was regarded as Data Deficient on the Redlist of Threatened Plants. #fynbos

Crazy weather in #Overberg last night. Over 135mm fell at @PhillipskopSA last night (rain gauge overflowed - other places have recorded 170-190mm). Klein River went from gentle stream to this is under 2 hours this morning as the flood water came down.

Spring brings new life and in this case a new tortoise hatchling. Parrot-beaked #tortoise do not grow large anyway, but this was barely bigger than my thumb. So keep a look out for where you put your feet when walking on the reserve.

Just reached 800 plant species for the reserve. An amazing achievement considering the size of the reserve is only 246ha. Most of the new identifications have been on less glamorous plants, such as restios, sedges and ferns but still some beauties such as Erica irbyana. #fynbos
