@salvabara Interesting!
It seems like this is a consequence of the fact that many real world objects are lambertian scatterers.
Does this suggest that, in order to improve our lighting, we actually need to improve the surfaces that we are shining the light onto?
A study found correlations between crime and street light! Areas that had no lights between midnight and 5 am had less crime. Obviously, thieves need light for their work. https://t.co/q0fjl10GWp
If you looked up from this spot 150 years ago, you would see the Milky Way. Today, we only have the moon.

Join us next Tuesday, March 8th, at 7pm for a talk+demo on Sidewalk Astronomy by M.S. Photonics student Bill Green! After the talk, participants have the unique opportunity to admire the universe with a telescope. @PhotonicsUGent

@KropBenesch From the manufacturer's perspective, LEDs are so cheap and energy efficient that it makes more sense to double the output than to add a down-reflector.
I agree that solutions will probably come from regulation and not purely innovation. How can engineers help?
We pointed telescopes at Orion and the Moon during #Brightbrussels festival to discover the lights of the Universe and discuss solutions for light pollution.
Rule 3: Lights need to face down and be fully shielded, so all that electricity you are paying for is being directed to where you need it and not being wasted by being sent into the night sky.
Rule 5: CRUCIAL! The colour temperature of the light needs to be warm white. That equates to around 2700-3000 on the Kelvin scale. If you’re unsure, check the tech spec online or ask in the shop. This is what will interfere the least with our wildlife and our own health.

This happens if ecologists and lighting technician work together: Luminaires that only illuminate the street, not the environment and don't produce glare. The next step towards good lighting.
