On this day in Philly sports history, May 23, 1991
Tommy Greene tossed a no-hitter against the Montreal Expos, the eighth no-hitter in Phillies franchise history.
The performance came in just the 15th start of Greene’s MLB career. His catcher, Darrin Fletcher, was making only the 17th start of his career while filling in for Darren Daulton behind the plate.
Greene also walked seven batters during the no-hitter, which at the time was tied for the third-most walks ever issued in a no-hit game and is now tied for the fourth-most

Greg Maddux was so smart he didn’t even need a catcher to call pitches. He had his own secret system, called every pitch himself, and no one noticed. Absolute mastermind stuff — this is the kind of baseball IQ you don’t see anymore.
