$40,000 worth of GPUs
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗔: the largest African language model ever trained from scratch, at 1.5 billion parameters. Not a fine tune, this was trained from the ground up for Africa. 🌍
Trained on 12 African languages, it beats models from Google, Meta, Alibaba and HuggingFace on African language modelling and translation while being up to 8x smaller.
𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗔 doesn't belong to us. The weights are open and free to use commercially, so researchers can build on a base that doesn't treat African languages as an afterthought.
Weights in the comments.
Thanks to @UNDP, @AIHub4SD and CINECA for the GPUs and the support. None of this happens without them.
“I draw a line down the middle of a chalkboard, sketching a male symbol on one side and a female symbol on the other.
Then I ask just the men: What steps do you guys take, on a daily basis, to prevent yourselves from being sexually assaulted? At first there is a kind of awkward silence as the men try to figure out if they've been asked a trick question.
The silence gives way to a smattering of nervous laughter.
Occasionally, a young a guy will raise his hand and say, 'I stay out of prison.' This is typically followed by another moment of laughter, before someone finally raises his hand and soberly states, 'Nothing. I don't think about it.'
Then I ask women the same question. What steps do you take on a daily basis to prevent yourselves from being sexually assaulted? Women throughout the audience immediately start raising their hands.
As the men sit in stunned silence, the women recount safety precautions they take as part of their daily routine.
Here are some of their answers:
Hold my keys as a potential weapon.
Look in the back seat of the car before getting in.
Carry a cell phone.
Don't go jogging at night.
Lock all the windows when I sleep, even on hot summer nights.
Be careful not to drink too much.
Don't put my drink down and come back to it; make sure I see it being poured.
Own a big dog.
Carry Mace or pepper spray. Have an unlisted phone number.
Have a man's voice on my answering machine.
Park in well-lit areas.
Don't use parking garages. Don't get on elevators with only one man, or with a group of men.
Vary my route home from work.
Watch what I wear.
Don't use highway rest areas. Use a home alarm system. Don't wear headphones when jogging.
Avoid forests or wooded areas, even in the daytime. Don't take a first-floor apartment.
Go out in groups.
Own a firearm.
Meet men on first dates in public places.
Make sure to have a car or cab fare.
Don't make eye contact with men on the street.
Make assertive eye contact with men on the street.”

After getting my first salary as a substitute teacher, I approached my good father and offered to buy him a suit as gratitude for all the support, love and taking care of us after mom passed on.
His reply
“ You want to buy a suit for someone with 6 grown kids, has a fully furnished house in the city and rural home with plenty livestocks and has a guaranteed monthly pension…. and you only have an academic certificate in your name”
He further went to give me a lesson: “You are like a germinating seed that has just sprouted.. If I harvest your leaves you will wilt”
My reaction:
“Yanuni” is a documentary about an Indigenous Amazonian leader who survived six assassination attempts.
It was free on YouTube for just days and passed 1 million views. So why isn’t it being distributed more widely?

"...The first step therefore is to make the black man come to himself; to pump back life into his empty shell; to infuse him with pride and dignity, to remind him of his complicity in the crime of allowing himself to be misused and therefore letting evil reign supreme..."
Meanwhile on Chinese TV, they're explaining why America's economics Nobel Prizes don't add up to anything.
Zhang Weiwei: every country that modernized needed a first pot of gold -- the starting capital that gets an economy growing.
"The West got theirs through violence, war, the slave trade. Ruthless plunder, ruthless slaughter."
China earned its own -- "through its own effort and sacrifice."
US-trained economist Wen Yi adds the punchline: Western models literally can't explain where that starting capital comes from. "Economics assumes it's given -- by God."
Which is why copying the Western model was never on offer for the Global South:
"Tell developing nations to copy you -- no pot of gold!"
An underreported positive reason why the birth rate is declining because we are quickly eradicating teenage pregnancy. The decrease has also meant a decline in high risk pregnancies and infant mortality. An important feat to celebrate.🥂
THE 20-YEAR LOCK-IN: HOW THE DA SOLD CAPE TOWN'S POWER TO AN AMERICAN LLC FOR R5.1 BILLION
Have you ever heard of a company called Make A Difference Ventures LLC?
No? Neither has Cape Town. Yet this American-registered company has just been handed a 20-year electricity contract by the City of Cape Town to the tune of R5.1 BILLION.
20 years. Locked. No exit.
WHO ARE THEY? WHO OWNS THEM?
The DA's only excuse is "it's cheaper than Eskom." 40MW solar in Philippi, 19-21% saving, CPI-linked not Eskom-linked. They say it will save R1.7 billion.
That's the sales pitch. Here is the truth:
1. An American LLC owning Cape Town's power.* Not a local cooperative. Not a Cape Flats community project. An LLC - a US structure built to hide beneficial owners. Who are the real shareholders? Who funded them? What are their political connections? The DA-run City has refused to show us the faces behind the LLC.
2. Awarded on deviation. This was not a clean, competitive, transparent tender. Council records show it was approved on deviation in February 2025. Deviation means they bypassed normal supply chain rules. For R5.1 billion.
3. Treasury flagged it.National Treasury itself had to write to the City asking about compliance failures. For a 20-year contract, the public participation process produced ONE comment from the public. One. For R5.1 billion of your electricity money. That is not consultation. That is capture.
4. A 20-year mortgage on your prepaid. The City says it will be funded from the bulk electricity account. That's your money every time you buy electricity. They are gambling that this company will exist, perform, and stay cheaper for two decades until 2046. If it fails, if it under-delivers, if it sells its shares offshore, Cape Town cannot walk away. You are the collateral.
THE DA'S HYPOCRISY
The DA built its brand attacking ANC long-term Eskom deals as corrupt and reckless. Now it signs the exact same model, just in blue.
Foreign company. Massive long-term lock-in. Deviation. Treasury query. Zero transparency.
If this was in Johannesburg under the ANC, Geordin Hill-Lewis would be marching to the Hawks with a dossier.
In Cape Town, it's called "innovation."
Don't be fooled. "Cheaper than Eskom" is not a business plan, it's a slogan. Eskom was also cheap in 1990.
Real energy independence is local, transparent, and publicly owned. This is not independence. This is outsourcing sovereignty to an LLC no one knows, for 20 years, with your money.
Cape Town must demand: Publish the full contract. Publish the owners. Publish the Treasury letter.
Do some digging. Then we share notes.
