In our digital age, self-portraits are literally taken a zillion times every day, but Robert Cornelius had to stare motionless for several minutes when he took his own picture in 1839. It was possibly the first time anyone had ever done this.

An aspiring performer by the name of "Billie" Cassin posed for vaudeville era photographer Orval Hixon in 1924.

She would go on to gain fame as Hollywood star Joan Crawford.

Orval Hixon was born on February 4, 1884.

She was 48 years old and they hoped the gift would provide some amusement during her solitude.
