1 Happy May Day! Did you know most photojournalism labour in Canada is freelance? It’s incredibly precarious work that’s in danger of vanishing. Imagine what your news would look like without photojournalists 🧵 #DemocracyUnseen#DemocracyUnderThreat
A good example why pubs should limit use of handout pics. Too many CAN pubs use HO photos too frequently, with big risks. Harming trust in them and Journalism as a whole. Serious Journalism means hiring trusted photojournalists and experienced photo editors.
Several leading news organizations withdrew a photograph issued by Kensington Palace of Kate, Britain's Princess of Wales, after post-publication analysis showed it did not meet their editorial standards https://t.co/g18zGOTj7B
For immediate release—Israel must protect journalists.
Gazan journalists are documenting events under unthinkable conditions and being killed at an unprecedented rate.
Earlier this week I had the pleasure of being able to chat with the one and only @mattgallowaycbc about the photo I took in Milne Fiord last July that won the first-ever @cjffjc/@EdwardBurtynsky award for climate photojournalism. You can listen below! https://t.co/vh6rMETiOX
OMG!
@anthonyfurey just released his platform today!
If everyone had 3 arms, I’m sure they would increase their prosperity, but it might reduce the number of jobs.
This ad shows that they should have hired a photographer!

Like pretty much everyone, @globeandmail has been thinking *a lot* about generative AI over the last few months.
Here’s a memo I sent to our newsroom recently on how we are navigating these waters

We are happy to see leaders in Canadian media @globeandmail are considering the looming impacts of AI on credibility. And that there is a hard line against using AI for news photography.

The @globeandmail's campaign to fix Canada's broken Freedom of Information regime has merch. How big of an FOI nerd are you? Would you pay $10 or $15 for a tote? DM me if interested. #SecretCanada#ItsYourRightToKnow
I always worry when I receive mail from @cityofwinnipeg because my first thought is that it’s a parking ticket but this was really nice and thoughtful. Thank you Mayor @ScottGillingham !
If 🌲🔥&🚨 agencies let us in, work with us, we can help combat mis- & disinfo during climate crises & disasters. We can help keep public informed & safe by showing them what’s happening. It is literally our job #wildfire#climatechange#MediaFreedom#PressFreedom
🧵Critical reporting via @FawcettAtkinson - one of best ways 🔥 & 🚨agencies can combat mis- & disinfo is let pro journalists have access. Yet in Canada, they often contribute to info vacuums by barring press. The public can’t understand what it can’t see https://t.co/71A1XxmV6B
In polarized times, relying only on gov & handout photos degrades public trust. It’s happening right now - conspiracy thinking, “something else is going on here,” etc. 🚨 gov comms folks work hard trying to keep public informed & safe, but it’s not enough for scale of disasters
