Tonight, I looked properly.
There’s something inside.
Not a receipt.
Something smaller.
Folded.
I haven’t opened it yet.
I’m not sure why.
Maybe because some stories deserve to wait until morning.
Until tomorrow,
Love,
Me.
E.M. left something else behind.
Dear Diary,
Where Did You Get That Jacket?
“Excuse me?”
I turned around.
A woman was looking at my jacket.
E.M.’s jacket.
Although lately I’ve stopped thinking of it that way.
“I love that,” she said. “Where did you get it?”
Easy question.
Vintage shop.
Two words.
I slipped my hands into the pockets as I walked away.
The old receipt wasn’t there.
Of course.
It’s been inside my notebook for weeks.
But my fingers found something else.
A tiny opening in the lining.
Right beside my repair.
I stopped walking.
I’d never noticed it before
Dear Diary,
I Used to Dress for the Compliment
I realised something uncomfortable this morning.
I’ve worn entire outfits for sentences.
“You look amazing.”
“Where is that from?”
“That colour suits you.”
“I love your outfit.”
Tonight, I stood in front of the mirror again.
Same outfit.
Same person.
Same opinion.
I liked it.
That was enough.
I think I’m beginning to understand something.
Style becomes much more interesting when nobody else gets a vote.
Until tomorrow,
Love,
Me.
Dear Diary,
Some Jewellery Is Worn Twice
The box was smaller than I remembered.
Soft at the corners.
A little faded.
Inside was a bracelet.
Nothing extravagant.
No enormous stone.
No name stamped somewhere important.
The possibility that pieces of us might continue walking around in the world long after we’ve stopped wearing them.
Tonight I didn’t put the bracelet back in its box.
It’s beside the gold hoops.
I think it deserves to live outside again.
Until tomorrow,
Love,
Me.
