#MultiversX & $EGLD Basics

The value of $EGLD will likely spike as DeFi platforms start increasing in usage. Welcome to your introduction to a platform you must know about.

MultiversX Basics
Formerly known as Elrond, MultiversX is a high-throughput blockchain providing security, efficiency, scalability, and interoperability beyond what is available with current top DeFi platforms. The token representing the platform is $EGLD. Two critical features that set MultiversX apart are Adaptive State Sharding and the Secure Proof of Stake (SPoS) consensus mechanism.

Adaptive State Sharding
This sharding mechanism allows the network to instantly adjust the number and size of shards based on demand to optimize performance and maintain decentralization. This allows the blockchain to reach high throughput while remaining decentralized and secure.

All three aspects of sharding (network, state, and transactions) are implemented simultaneously. This results in very high performance on a network of inexpensive nodes, and ultimately- very low transaction fees.

Ethereum and other chains are not even close to having sharding this advanced on their chains. If every user from #Ethereum, #Solana, and #Cardano came to MultiversX the blockchain could support all of them with no congestion and low fees. Theoretically, the only bottlenecks would be web frontends needing to scale to the increased user demand.

Secure Proof of Stake (SPoS)
Key in MultiversX's design. This consensus mechanism ensures that the network remains secure and trustworthy. Validators, who are responsible for verifying transactions, are chosen randomly from a shard in a way that prevents a bad actor from gaining too much control over the network.

The consensus mechanism uses modified Boneh–Lynn–Shacham ("BLS") multi-signatures among the validators. Nodes inside the shard are randomly selected for consensus with no method of knowing who will be in the group more than one round in advance. Validators are rewarded for their work, which incentivizes them to act honestly and maintain the security of the network.

EGLD Tokenomics
- Maximum theoretical supply of 31.42 million EGLD
- "Theoretical" in that it will likely never be reached due to inflation being offset by transaction fees.
- More transactions = more fees = less inflation = never reaching maximum supply.
- Strong emphasis on maintaining a low inflation rate, with a focus on long-term sustainability and value accrual for users.
- As of now 64.62% of the circulating supply is locked in staking, and this is a finite supply asset. See below for more supply info.
