Freedom finally came on 06/19/1865, when 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250K enslaved black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth" by the newly freed people in Texas.

@nckhui Why do you always stop reporting on stories. Leaving it to believe things are already not happening. Counties already post lesson plans. Teachers may alter some, but they already do this. Why not tell people that.

@melton4raleigh Needs to always be free. They used to be, and businesses thrived downtown. Now we are losing businesses left and right down there. Tax dollars built those decks should always be free.
