This is ridiculous.

Today, the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith released a doctrinal note "Mater Populi Fidelis," approved by Leo XIV and signed by Cardinal Víctor Manuel “Tucho” Fernández, erroneously stating that the title Co-Redemptrix is “inappropriate.”

“Given the need to explain the subordinate role of Mary to Christ in the work of Redemption, it is always inappropriate to use the title Co-Redemptrix… This title risks obscuring the unique salvific mediation of Christ… When an expression requires numerous and continual explanations to prevent it from deviating from its correct meaning, it does not serve the faith of the People of God and becomes inappropriate.”

It's not that hard, really.

Our Lord is the Redeemer of mankind. Our Lady united her prayers and sufferings with Him, becoming a co-redeemer with and beneath (cum et sub) Christ.

Indeed, according to St. Paul, EVERY Christian is called to be a co-redeemer with and beneath Christ: "Who [scil. Paul] now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ, in my flesh, for his body, which is the Church" (Col 1:24 DRA).

Such intimate cooperation in redemption is exactly what we'd expect for the woman whose unique privilege it was to be the God-bearer, the Theotokos; her Divine Motherhood explains the privilege of her Immaculate Conception, her Assumption into Glory, and her being the Mediatrix of All Graces.

Indeed, the error in the DDF document can be easily seen if one only notes that the expressions "Immaculate Conception" and "Divine Motherhood" ALSO "require numerous and continual explanations to prevent them from deviating from their correct meaning," as anyone knows who has ever done apologetics with Protestants. Should we then toss them in the rubbish bin?
