🔴Breaking: This morning, our crew discovered a boat in distress: the 45 people on board were not wearing life jackets, the engine had failed and it smelled of fuel. We are very sad that our help unfortunately came too late for one baby, whose dead body we recovered. 1/3
Despite this, Italian authorities have so far rejected our captain’s urgent requests for a closer port. They assigned the northerly port of #Livorno, 2 days’ sail from our current location. We demand a closer port for the physical and psychological well-being of all on board! 3/3
[TRIGGER WARNING: Death]🔴Breaking: This morning, a mother and her 3-year-old, rescued from distress at sea by our crew, were evacuated to #Lampedusa by the Italian Coast Guard. Also evacuated: the body of the mother’s baby, who was dead by the time our rescue team arrived. 1/3
[3/3] Once again, Italian authorities have assigned an unnecessarily distant port for the #disembarkation of survivors. In this case, we will have to sail to #Livorno, around 1,170 km from the location of the first rescue, which will take 3 days. 📷: @pietrobertora / SOS Humanity

[3/3] This journey will take 4-5 days, wasting precious time and disregarding survivors’ right to a prompt disembarkation. Every additional hour’s worth of fuel costs €125. Help power our rescue mission and donate now! 👉 https://t.co/Naq4JenRDs

[2/3] The distress case was reported by @alarm_phone. Once again, Italian authorities have assigned an intentionally distant port as the place of safety for the disembarkation of survivors: Marina di #Carrara, 1.150km away from the rescue.
🔴Breaking: [1/3] This afternoon, the crew of Humanity 1 rescued 28 people from a small wooden boat in distress, including 1 pregnant woman, 1 child, and 2 babies. The boat was overcrowded and smelled of fuel. The engine was not running. No one on board was wearing a lifejacket.
