Conçue par la Oxford Cartographers, elle articule le temps sur un axe horizontal et les grandes régions du monde sur un axe vertical.

Les bandes colorées représentent les principales civilisations et empires, leur largeur indiquant leur durée d’existence sans refléter leur superficie réelle.

Bien qu'imparfaite, elle propose une lecture synthétique de plusieurs millénaires d’évolutions humaines, des premières civilisations à l’époque contemporaine.
