I was always the hardcore YGO player, never backing down on YGO, always defending it! But that was just „blind & ignorant love“ for the game.
We are used to all the ups and especially the downs of this game. And that‘s rlly sad.
If you tell someone from outside the YGO bubble, what you need to do to compete just at the regional level, they would think, that you are crazy.
I don‘t even wanna start with mid and high ycs level.
The rulings are not only feeling like they are convoluted, they are! Very often!
For example my pet deck Purrely:
Happiness shouldn‘t be allowed to search when crashed. I know the 5 steps of the DMG step and all their details and in the „End of DMG step“ the first thing that happens, is sending a battle destroyed Monster to the GY, which happens with Happy. So no window to trigger.
The ON FIELD effect is literally triggering in the GY because Konami said so. It‘s so dumb.
And where exactly can you read about the „there is only one Chain allowed in the Damage Calculation“.
I know many rulings, that cannot be found easily.
I understand it feels bad when established players talk bad about the game, but we have to talk about it, otherwise nothing will change.
We love ygo! But Konami just doesn‘t care (European YCS huh).
I‘ve also informed myself about other TCGs, for example Flesh & Blood.
Much smaller playerbase (almost „dead“ in some regions), insane prizepool (1.5 million for a season) and the company cares about the community. You need even more dedication than in ygo, because it‘s much harder at high level, but the base line of that game is really easy.
I cannot say that about YGO.
Just to not go x-3 at locals you need to know so much.
In the end everybody has to decide, what their reasoning for playing YGO is.
For me it‘s the gameplay. But with the current state even the gameplay is too bad. If they kill Fire, Yubel will take its place and that deck plays through HTs like a hot knife through butter. If you don‘t handtrap it, they have 1-2 omni negations.
In the end it‘s just a hobby! Many will treat it as such and this is totally fine! They don‘t play for prizing, they don‘t play for glory. They just play.
But before someone without any connection to YGO has to go through all of this, I would rather have them play another TCG, where they can also dedicate their time and get rewarded by a much better prizepool and a less toxic community.
This is also a big downside. Even the most local community can be soooo toxic when it comes to deckbuilding and different opinions.
I‘m in maaany different YGO groups (idk why😂) and how they talk and treat each other sometimes is just crazy. Nobody concentrates on the actual important things to get better. They rather wanna put ea other down for ideas that they don‘t agree with.
Tbh it happens in every cardgame, but Ygo is much harsher due to the difficulty. And what does it do to new members of the community when they see that?
They will be intimidated, maybe not even chatting at all.
It‘s not only that, there‘s much more.
This is the reality we cannot escape:
What will Konami do to get more players in, that won’t quit after a short time, when a chunk of the playerbase rn will quit due to format, prizing, age, family, other priorities?
There will be a time when many of the 30+ year olds just quit because of time or family and then the next gen and the next.
This happens to every cardgame to a certain extent, but many new players are flocking in due to the IP or low entrance barrier.
The ygo IP is cool, but pretty much oldschool. Like who (without a connection to YGO) is watching the old YGO anime out of nowhere?
Even if they do a new anime, an anime revolving completely around a card game is not that appealing anymore to outsiders. Also there is 0 connection to the actual game. Which makes the anime even more weird.
One piece’s and Disney‘s media is ofc not about cardgames and ppl are flooding the scene.
Rn I have no idea, how Konami can approach this.
