I loved your Barcelona speech Mr President. It had all that South Africa needs to always pay attention to, to give meaning to its constitutional commitments at home and abroad. Such commitments include the advancement of justice, including social justice, which must underpin the equality quest and all other endeavours aimed at ensuring the world and its institutions work equitably for all.

Worth remembering that Roelf Meyer has consistently stood for a united South Africa—he publicly pushed back against Western Cape secession efforts a few years ago. That commitment to unity and stability is exactly what we need in an ambassador.

This is Roelf Meyer’s history as an apartheid Minister of Defence between 1991 and 1992:

Members of the 32 Battalion, an elite SADF unit carried out a deadly raid in Phola Park near Thokoza.

Two women were shot dead and more than 100 people were injured after live rounds were fired indiscriminately at the community.

Witnesses alleged that apartheid soldiers also beat residents with rifle butts, and several women reported being raped or sexually harassed during the twelve‑hour operation.

The Goldstone Commission found that more than 200 rounds of live ammunition had been fired at the community.

Similar raids were carried out in Thokoza, Katlehong, and other East Rand townships.

Roelf Meyer never took responsibility and accountability for these crimes. He is today being rebranded as a post apartheid diplomat.

Appointing him is a reminder that real change often comes from those willing to confront the systems they were once part of. He played a key role in negotiating the end of apartheid alongside leaders like @CyrilRamaphosa in commitment to reconciliation and nation building matters
