So whilst I applaud the progress and positivity made in so many areas with gender equality. I am also broken hearted at the loss of another mother, sister, wife, human.

We often talk about the theme of IWD. This year it is ���Invest in women: Accelerate progress."
A good and noble theme, as clearly progress is not where we want it or where it should be. And I desperately want gender equity, a human rights issue to be achieved for everyone.

But it seems hard to think about that today as I read two articles.
The arrest of a 22 year old man over the disappearance of Samantha Murphy a Ballarat mother of 3, and of serial rapist Wayne Astill
Maybe this years theme should be “Protect Women: accelerate safety”

Sadly it is not only in the dark they need to be cautious, but in the brilliant rays of a sunny morning or under the guard of someone with a duty of care .

I reflected on the many conversations I have with my daughters, counselling them to not be alone at night, to watch their drinks, and to keep an eye on their “sisters”.
