I sometimes I think that the beginning of Orania is underrated:

>Start over in a abandoned town with about 40/50 people
>No municipal services, no internal economy, decaying infrastructure
>Harsh environment - arid climate, large boulders, and hard rock beds
>Very little labour available and even less funds
>Health care and basic shopping more than 40km away - often more than 120km away
>R0 in government funding.

The early days could not have been easy. Those people weren't fleeing to greener pastures- they were visionaries and pioneers. They chose the difficult path and built something where very little existed.
And they built the world that I grew up in, which is today an Afrikaner haven for many.

We have a responsibility to keep building, just as those who came before us did.

In August 2014, Dolf de Lange (67) and his beloved wife Pop de Lange (64), long-time caretakers of the West Side Terrace complex in Claremont, Pretoria West, were found brutally murdered in their townhouse. Their son Deon and daughter-in-law Colette discovered their bloodied bodies in the bedroom on that terrible Tuesday morning. The elderly couple had been beaten to death with a blunt object, suffering visible and horrific head injuries after they fought back against their attackers. The bedroom was left in chaos from their desperate struggle.

The attackers had entered through the motor garage between 7:00 and 8:00 am, overwhelming this gentle retired couple in their own home. By the time Deon and Colette arrived around 9:00 am, Dolf and Pop were already gone.

Colette shared through her shock, “It feels so unreal. It is so senseless.” Dalene Loodts, who had recently taken over as caretaker after knowing the De Langes for eight years, described them as wonderful, friendly, and always helpful people. Just months earlier, Pop and her daughter Suzette had already faced a terrifying robbery right in front of the complex. Now this unimaginable tragedy has shattered their family forever.

Our hearts break for Deon, Colette, and all their loved ones who must now face life without Dolf and Pop. The pain of a son finding his parents' bodies in such a brutal state is beyond words. No family should ever endure this kind of grief and horror.

Dolf and Pop deserved peaceful golden years surrounded by family after a lifetime of caring for others. Instead, their home became the scene of such violence.
