🪂 Twisted Riser Syndrome—Why Cutting Away Can Sometimes Be Difficult
A cutaway system that operates normally under ordinary conditions may become significantly harder to activate during a highly loaded, spinning malfunction.
This article from the Parachute Laboratories archives examines suspended-harness testing conducted to better understand the problem. The experiments identified two primary factors that may increase cutaway difficulty:
-Side-loading and twisting of the 3-Ring assembly, increasing the load transferred to the locking loop
-“Finger trapping” of the cutaway cable as a loaded riser channel compresses around it
The article also discusses canopy control during deployment, cutaway-cable housings, cable coatings, lubrication, and equipment maintenance.

WASP — Water Aircrew Survival Parachute
When an aircrew emergency happens over water, getting safely under canopy is only part of the problem.
The PLABS WASP brings emergency parachute capability and post-bailout survival capability together in one mission-focused system. Designed for aircrew operating over or near water, the WASP incorporates a dedicated survival compartment and can be configured with a one-person life raft tethered directly to the parachute harness.
Depending on the mission and configuration, WASP options can include round or ram-air canopies, adjustable or non-adjustable harness configurations, static-line or ripcord activation, and alternative survival loads such as desert-survival or medical equipment.
For life-raft configurations, the raft can be deployed and CO₂-inflated while the aircrew member is under canopy, allowing survival equipment to be brought into the emergency sequence before water entry.

Today’s Featured Drop is the Parachute Laboratories Egress System — a purpose-built emergency parachute system designed to provide a supplemental, last-resort escape capability for appropriately trained and equipped users when conventional evacuation routes from elevated structures are no longer achievable.
Built around the current TSO’d Racer harness design, the standard configuration includes a 300 sq. ft. BaseX 7-cell ram-air canopy designed for rapid, on-heading openings at sub-terminal speeds. Alternate canopy configurations and customer-specific solutions may also be available.
The Egress System can be configured around the specific application, including:
Fixed static-line deployment from an approved, engineered hard point
Trained user-initiated deployment
Specialized configurations for response personnel
Customer-specific installations based on the facility and operating requirement
PLABS can also assist organizations with system configuration, fitting, canopy selection, deployment architecture, familiarization, inspection, training requirements, volume pricing, and current lead times.

On August 16, 1940, the U.S. Army conducted its first official parachute jump, helping validate the concept of inserting American ground forces by parachute. Eighty-six years later, that airborne legacy continues through the men and women who train, serve, and stand ready around the world.
