4. You reach through the hole. In the small gap between the drywall and brick, you find a ceramic mug shaped like a wolf’s head. The nose and one of the ears are chipped.

Inside the mug is a wadded up piece of paper.

1. You are standing in the guest bedroom of an empty house. It’s late afternoon, and light streams through the shadeless windows.

Outside, you see children playing in the street. They chase each other relentlessly and shriek with delight.

On the floor is an open duffle bag.
