“A hot Bucket tears out of the gate with Bobby leading the charge. Garcia answers with a strong Jack-A-Roe, then C.C. Rider > It Takes a Lot to Laugh gives Jerry a chance to settle into an old Dylan classic. An 18-beat Beat It on Down the Line, a silky West L.A. Fadeaway, and a beautiful Masterpiece welcome Stagger Lee and Johnny B. Goode to close the set.
The second set begins with a set closer in Deal into three set openers, Samson & Delilah > Mississippi Half-Step > Feel Like a Stranger, the boys with a surprise up their sleeve for the hometown crowd. Out of a magical Drums > Space, the band tiptoes into a gorgeous China Doll, then rolls through Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away.
Brokedown Palace sends everyone home. In a week or so, a hot band heads off to Ohio to open the Fall Tour in which I was pleased to meet them. Enjoy” - Martin Knott

“Let the Good Times Roll > Wang Dang Doodle gets everyone on board immediately, with Bobby leading the charge and Jerry filling in with strong vocals. West L.A. Fadeaway is smooth and straight at you, while Brent delivers one of the great versions of Blow Away. Queen Jane Approximately, a soulful Loser, and Cassidy > Don't Ease Me In close a terrific first set.
The second set keeps the energy flowing with China > Rider before Bobby pours everything he has into Looks Like Rain. Jerry follows that with a soaring Eyes of the World that feels like the centerpiece of the night. The Rhythm Devils are on during Drums and Space will take you to the moon. The band then rolls out The Wheel > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hey Jude Reprise > I Need a Miracle > Black Peter before closing the set with One More Saturday Night.
Phil delivers a rare Box of Rain encore, and another great night of Spring Tour 1989 is in the books. Enjoy!” - Martin Knott.

Two freshly mastered shows from a hot band in 1989 and 1991 are now streaming exclusively on Play Dead.
“With Ann Arbor in the rearview the band is heading to Cincinnati. Let the Good Times Roll > Wang Dang Doodle gets Riverfront Arena moving, while Brent delivers perhaps one of the best versions of Blow Away before a soulful Loser and a Cassidy > Don't Ease Me In close the first set. The second set shines with China > Rider, a soaring Eyes of the World, and a strong post-Space sequence of The Wheel > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hey Jude Reprise > Miracle > Black Peter. Phil's Box of Rain encore is the perfect ending.
Our second stop is Shoreline in August '91, the final night of a six-show west coast run.
Hell in a Bucket roars out of the gate, while Hornsby lights up every song all night long especially West L.A. Fadeaway and Masterpiece. The second set's unusual Deal > Samson > Half-Step > Stranger sequence into D/S before the band tiptoes into a beautiful China Doll. An energetic GDTRFB > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away closes the set before Brokedown Palace sends everyone home with a tear in their eye and a smile on their face. Enjoy!” - Martin Knott

"Ann Arbor is still buzzing, the National Championship glow is still fresh, and the Grateful Dead have one more night to add to the story.
Touch of Grey —an anthem for a generation of Deadheads and a perfect way to keep the celebration going. Little Red Rooster follows before Brown-Eyed Women > Mama Tried > Mexicali Blues brings the cowboy tunes into play. A beautiful Althea gives way to Masterpiece, and a soaring Bird Song lifts off before Promised Land closes a terrific first set.
The second set is pure fun. Scarlet > Fire gets everyone dancing before Playing in the Band > Built to Last leads us into Drums > Space. Out of space, Brent delivers I Will Take You Home, singing to his daughter before Phil detonates The Other One. A passionate Wharf Rat follows, then Around & Around > Playing in the Band Reprise brings the journey full circle.
Only Brokedown Palace could close this celebration, the perfect ending to two unforgettable nights in Ann Arbor.
Championship week. Championship crowd. Championship Grateful Dead! Enjoy!" - Martin Knott

"The band comes screaming out of the gate with Feel Like a Stranger > Franklin's Tower, and the building’s on fire. Minglewood Blues is exceptional, Candyman is sweet as ever, and a run through Memphis Blues, Far From Me, and Dupree's Diamond Blues sets up an extended Let It Grow that unexpectedly at the very end Jerry decides it’s time for U.S. Blues to close the set. You can feel the energy with each passing note.
Samson & Delilah > Cumberland Blues > Women Are Smarter its getting hotter and hotter, and Terrapin Station takes it over the top.. The Rhythm Devils deliver a championship performance of their own, and out of Space comes a beautiful China Doll with a perfect transition. Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away sets up an appearance from Quinn the Eskimo who closes the night, and the celebration spills back out into Ann Arbor. Enjoy." - Martin Knott

Two nights of @GratefulDead was the perfect follow up in Ann Arbor after the Wolverines won their first National title 🏆 April 5th and 6th, 1989 had championship energy, and you can feel it in these recordings from the Crisler Arena.
"Night one opens with a smoking Stranger > Franklin's. Minglewood, Candyman, and an extended Let It Grow > U.S. Blues are gas on the fire. The second set explodes with Samson > Cumberland > Women Are Smarter > a huge Terrapin, before China Doll, Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away, and The Mighty Quinn send the crowd back into the streets.
Night two opens with Touch of Grey, don’t miss the Althea, Masterpiece, and a soaring Bird Song. Then comes a monster second set: Scarlet > Fire, Playing in the Band, The Other One, Wharf Rat, and a beautiful Playing Reprise. Only Brokedown Palace could close a midweek run like this.

"It's a Friday, in New York, and it's game on when the band opens with Let the Good Times Roll > Hell in a Bucket. A strong Cold Rain & Snow, Loser, and a run of blues follows with Walkin, Memphis, with Dupree’s taking us to the Promised Land.
Samson & Delilah and a beautiful Ship of Fools. Jerry’s voice is so solid, another Victim > Foolish Heart brings us into Drums > Space which opens the door for Brent, and he delivers a passionate I Will Take You Home, then a perfectly timed eruption by Phil takes us into The Other One > with Phil just dropping the bombs. A great Stella Blue that Jerry is clearly enjoying before a sunburst of Sugar Magnolia closes the set.
A rocking U.S. Blues finishes the night as fans flood the NYC streets still dancing." - Martin Knott

"The band prepares to close out its first-ever nine-show run at Madison Square Garden with these two performances, and by this point they’ve touched nearly every corner of the song book. The New York crowd provided the energy night after night, and the exchange between band and audience was fully alive.
“Don’t tell me this town ain’t got no heart…” - the message received and everybody in the building already knows NYC has plenty of HEART! Candyman follows and Jerry fills it with filigree’s. Then comes the a 22-beat intro into Beat It On Down the Line (9/22), with the Garden crowd hanging on every turn. Greatest Story Ever Told, a beautiful To Lay Me Down, gives rise to a great Cassidy, and a smoking Deal close a first set that never lets up.
China > Rider always raises the energy before a rare second-set Tom Thumb’s Blues lays the tracks for wild Estimated > Eyes > Drums > Space. Out of space, Miracle > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hey Jude brings the Lovelight. It’s a Love fest NYC style.
A soulfully delivered Brokedown takes us to the penultimate night…" - Martin Knott

"September 22 opens with Shakedown Street and there’s no need to poke around the NY faithful know what’s coming. Candyman makes a visit and they reel off a 22-beat BIODTL, taking us to a solid Cassidy > Deal. A huge second set featuring China > Rider >Tom Thumb > Estimated > Eyes > D/S and a massive Lovelight sends the crowd into a frenzy before a soulful Brokedown Palace to close out the night.
September 23 keeps the momentum rolling with Let the Good Times Roll > Hell in a Bucket. The blues-heavy first set gives way to a beautiful Ship of Fools, an always improving Victim > Foolish >D/S, a back side sequence of I Will Take You Home > a thunderous The Other One > a near perfect Stella Blue > provides a sunburst of Sugar Magnolia, everybody’s dancing. "Jack Straw > Althea opens the night before rolling into some cowboy tunes and a beautiful Peggy-O. Bobby is fully into Masterpiece, with Jerry lifting the vocals to another level. Then comes a rare Louie Louie (only played a handful of times, mostly in ’88), before a high-energy Music Never Stopped closes the first set.
The second set starts with Bertha > Cumberland Blues > Looks Like Rain which gives Bobby the space to work the Garden crowd with an emotional LLR, that leads the band into an 11+ minute Terrapin Station before diving into Drums > Space.
The boys come Truckin’ out of space and are literally Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad. A passionate Morning Dew brings the set to its peak and Johnny B. Goode closes another huge night at the Garden." - Martin Knott
