Man Who Posted Heartbreaking Plea to President Arrested for Murder of Partner

“Tell me, Mr. President—what would you do if you came home and found your wife like I found mine? What would you do if no one could answer how, or why, or who? How would you sleep?” were the words of Mauritz Andries Rheeder (57) in a Facebook post on 2 June 2025. Rheeder has since been arrested for allegedly murdering his partner, Riana Nel (50).

Police investigations revealed that Riana had visited Rheeder, who was her partner, at the automotive dealership where he worked in Mthatha on 31 May 2025. Following a quarrel, Rheeder allegedly assaulted Riana at his workplace. He only transported her to hospital on Sunday, 1 June, where she was admitted for treatment. At that time, Rheeder reportedly claimed that she had been attacked by “unknown thugs” near the dealership.

Rheeder visited her in hospital on Friday, 6 June, bringing refreshments. Shortly after consuming these items, she became severely ill and died shortly afterwards on the same day.

The case against Rheeder was postponed until 17 June 2025 for his formal bail application.
