The Availability Heuristic: Why The Internet Punishes Silence
There is a dangerous lie that many talented professionals tell themselves: "If I am good enough, the market will find me."
I pity you if you believe this becausethis is a fundamental misunderstanding of human psychology.
The market does not reward the best solution; it rewards the most available solution.
This phenomenon is known in behavioral science as the Availability Heuristic.
I experienced this firsthand back in college. A friend of mine lost an election to an opposing candidate who was "seen everywhere." Although we believed our candidate was the most competent, he simply wasn't in people's faces enough to win. The other guy was readily available around campus, and that visibility translated into votes.
The Availability Heuristic dictates that people judge the frequency, probability, or value of something based on how easily examples come to mind. If a client can easily recall your name, your value inflates. If they cannot recall you, your value drops to zero regardless of your actual skill level which means we have to systematically show up Every day.
The Cognitive Mechanism of "Showing Up"
The human brain is a cognitive miser. It seeks to conserve energy by avoiding complex searches.
When a business owner has a problem, whether they need a salesperson, a painter, a writer, a developer, or a consultant.
Their brain does not perform a global audit of every available professional to find the "genius." Instead, it performs a rapid memory search.
It grabs the first option that satisfies the criteria of "good enough" and "easy to remember."
This explains why the internet is dominated by average talent with exceptional consistency. While the perfectionist is laboring in obscurity, waiting for their work to be flawless, the average creator is publishing daily. By the time the perfectionist is ready to reveal their masterpiece, the average creator has already occupied the client’s mind.
Visibility Is a Prerequisite for Ability
Let me reiterate this for you; without visibility, your ability might become a liability.
You may be the most skilled practitioner in your niche, but if your work is not "available" to the mental cache of your audience, you effectively do not exist.
@SamuelXeus would say, "Build in silence and build rubbish."
Building in silence is not a badge of honor; it is a financial mistake. The internet pays those who show up because "showing up" exploits the brain's preference for Retrieval Fluency.
The more often you appear in a feed, the easier it is for a brain to process your existence. In the subconscious mind of a buyer, this "ease of processing" is often mistaken for credibility.
The Stern Reality
If you are prioritizing the refinement of your skills over the distribution of your work, you are making a strategic error.
Your vivid imagination has led you to bet that your quality will scream louder than your competitor's consistency However,History suggests this is a losing bet.
You must stop treating your visibility as an optional marketing task and start treating it as a core professional responsibility. The client cannot hire the genius they do not know exists. They will hire the person who was there this morning.
The question you must answer is simple: Are you building a portfolio that proves you are good, or are you building a presence that ensures you are remembered?
Haha Just Ranting to myself anyways.
