W. R. Poage Legislative Library is part of Baylor Libraries. It is a special collection & research facility collecting congressional & political materials.
As a long-time member and chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture and a representative of the United States to the Interparliamentary Union, Poage saw every continent and visited dozens of countries in Central and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
Welcome to Poage Library’s “Summer of Travel” series! To celebrate the reduction of COVID-19 cases and the easing of travel restrictions, Poage is highlighting materials from our collections and some of the interesting places our donors visited throughout their times in office.
It is today only a ruin,” Poage writes, “but it does show clearly howadvanced these people were.” The accompanying pictures show Poage and his colleagues in front of Persian ruins and architecture. If you could go visit anywhere in the ancient world, where would you go?

As a staunch supporter of the farmer and agricultural laborer, Poage fought for several resolutions and acts that helped preserve water, prevent flooding and protect other important natural resources. Poage is pictured here giving an address at the Belton Dam Project in 1953.
Today is World Water Day, a holiday that calls for everyone to consider what water means to them and to think about ways in which this vital resource can be protected. Representative Bob Poage often championed the conservation of water and natural resources throughout his career.
It is important to us that we continue to promote diversity and inclusion and remember that “The African American experience is one of the most important threads in the American tapestry” (Bill Frist).
