Founded in 1870 the City of Pocahontas, Iowa, has grown into a hub in rural northwest Iowa. The police department works to protect, inform, and educate.
It was elementary school when we first heard the Caped Crusader spin on this holiday favorite tune. Passed down from one generation to the next, this year we’re adding a new twist that should also be passed down: when you're driving, put the phone away! https://t.co/KV5vpZGWhD
Vis is around 300 feet near that car in the photo. I have seen several cars so far this morning who have not turned their lights on. If you have automatic headlights it may be too light for them to engage. This isn't about the law it's about your life and others. Please make sure your headlights are on.
Areas of fog are occurring in parts of central Iowa this evening. Visibilities of one half mile are common in many areas with localized visibilities of one quarter of a mile at times. If traveling in central Iowa this evening, be prepared for rapid changes in visibility. #iawx

Pocahontas has become incredibly slick at this time. There is a light mist falling and it has created a sheet of thin ice making steering and stopping difficult. @NWSDesMoines
At 845P IDOT plows are out working the State highways. Roads continue to be slick. The pictures attached show City, County, and State roads in our area. Visibility is good but stopping distances are not. We have lots of people on the roads at school events so take it slow tonight. @NWSDesMoines
Good morning Pocahontas County at 2A! Road conditions are degraded due to a light snow with one inch of snow covering all road surfaces in our area. It will be a slow start to your Monday. Lanes are getting packed by prior road traffic. Please take time getting to your destination with increased stopping distances. Arrive alive! Visibility is three miles at 23F. #iawx @NWSDesMoines@statewideia511

There are two recovery vehicles that will be in that area to locate the payload with parachute. While it has gps tracking, if you see where it lands you can call 7123353536 for the PD and we can relay to the recovery teams.
Some science today with Pocahontas Area Elementary school with the release of a weather balloon from the soccer fields in Pocahontas. We know the origin of this balloon so no need to worry. Current tracking shows it will come down somewhere between Twin Lakes and Manson. #iawx
Well given our weather it is fitting now to have a G4 out of G5 rated solar storm over Pocahontas. Thanks Zach for the picture. If you start having issues with electronics you know the cause. #iawx
Reminder today there will be a larger than normal law enforcement presence at the Pocahontas High School for a morning of traffic safety education. We appreciate the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau, The Pocahontas County Sheriff's Office,
At 9P there are some minor impacts due to blowing snow which will drop sight to less than a quarter mile briefly. Use caution on east-west roads where there are protected areas on the north side. A thin layer of snow has settled in many of these. @NWSDesMoines#iawx
Visibility is beginning to drop to two miles in our area due to snow. Road surfaces are wet however I am not sure they will stay that way. Watch for sudden ice development if you travel this evening. Temp is 15F and falling. @NWSDesMoines#iawx
