In 2005, Robbie Williams opened the Live 8 concert in London with a rousing performance of his signature hit "Angels." In front of more than 200,000 people in Hyde Park, he turned the event into one of the day's most memorable sing-alongs, with the massive crowd enthusiastically singing every word back to him.

Despite becoming one of the defining British pop songs of the 1990s, "Angels" peaked only at #4 on the UK Singles Chart and never reached #1. It nevertheless went on to become one of the UK's best-selling singles of all time, and its cultural impact has been so profound that it was voted the #1 song the British public would most like played at their funerals.

U2 had difficulty finishing "With Or Without You" in the recording sessions (Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois almost threw the track away), but it ended up becoming U2's first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (it spent 3 weeks at the top in May 1987) and one of the biggest hits of their career. "Into the Groove" was released in 1985 (track from the film Desperately Seeking Susan and single that became Madonna's first UK #1). On July 13, 1985, she took the stage at Live Aid in Philadelphia (JFK Stadium) and delivered one of the most iconic performances in the festival's history.

Tainted Love is not an original from Soft Cell! The song was written by Ed Cobb and first recorded by Gloria Jones (ex-girlfriend of T. Rex's Marc Bolan) in 1964/65 as the B-side of a single.

Marc Almond and Dave Ball (the only two members of the duo) discovered the track and re-recorded it in 1981 with a minimalist, dark and obsessive synth-pop arrangement for their debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret. They recorded everything in just a day and a half in a tiny London studio.

Released in July 1981, it became #1 in the UK for 2 weeks and in the US reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, but spent an incredible 43 weeks on the chart, an absolute record at the time.
