A violent thunderstorm in Germany helped launch the Protestant Reformation. While returning from a visit to his parents, law student Martin Luther was caught in the storm near Stotternheim. Fearing for his life, he cried out, “Help me, St. Anne! I will become a monk!” Within two weeks, he kept his vow and entered the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt.

German reformer Martin Luther, formerly a monk, married Katherine von Bora, a former nun who had escaped from her convent in a fish barrel. Their marriage was a bold public rejection of mandatory clerical celibacy.
