This tweet has been referenced in @Podnews today, (thank you James for sharing my well-intended message) and I just wanted to further connect and clarify my thoughts on this, now that Libsyn CEO John W Gibbons has responded.
First of all, thank you so much to John for bothering to respond publicly. That shows character and is absolutely demonstrative of the awesome people that work there. Dave, Rob and Elsie all know just how much respect I have for them and their experience, and I've contributed to "The Feed" several times.
I'll never not love that team and buy them a beverage any chance I get.
But...
I have been a very big supporter of Libsyn from the very beginning. I was there when they launched and had very few clients, and most were indies with one or two really big names.
So I remember how barebones this company was back in the day. They only needed to focus on doing one thing back then - syndicating content via RSS. Which they did flawlessly.
But times have changed a lot since 2004.
The podcasting space has changed a lot in just the past 3 years.
Post Covid podcasting is GENERATIONALLY different from pre Covid podcasting.
Some companies have leapt in to this change and embraced it, and haven't always got it right.
I get that there's always risk with innovation.
But my argument is that we're past that now.
Podcast hosting - IE putting your RSS feed on a server - is now a commodity. And since a few years ago, you haven't even had to pay for it if you didn't want to.
And this isn't the time to talk about the benefits of paying for your feed rather than having it shared for free. I'm bored of that discussion and dismiss free hosting options without hesitation.
Here's the deal; in 2024, when we're going to be spoilt for choice when it comes to our content publication, the need for even having RSS is becoming less and less paramount.
Arguably, the days of open source entertainment are going to be a ghost town soon.
Scraps of attention in that space will being fought for by only us OG podcasters who scream at the kids that "you can't call it a podcast if it isn't delivered over RSS!!"
I've been one of the very few last remaining voices to defend that as a thing, but even I'm becoming aware that we're still bringing up a debate that's already been lost.
While YouTube and its value in podcasting is still very much praised from a perspective that's massively skewed in favour of the platform and its users and against the creators...
Well, look.
Our audiences have spoken, and they're unmoved by our passion.
They want platforms and tools that give them the content that they want, when they want it, and how they want it.
They couldn't give a crap whether that's via RSS or on and app on their television.
They're uninterested in history, legacy or policy.
They just want the stuff, man.
And if you're a company that's ignoring new things, sorry but you're becoming redundant. And no amount of customer loyalty can save you when you are.
Third party tools, VFV (whether you like it or not), the ability to add some damn chapters, soundbites, transcripts and even allow the listener to choose between media... these are things people want.
These are things my podcasting clients want.
These are things I want.
And believe me, I love my good old reliable, comfy, fast 2010 Honda Accord GT and can't bear to think of the day I'll have to part with it.
But next year when it fails its MOT, you can bet your sweet podcasting microphone of choice that I'll be trading it in for a new car that comes natively with Bluetooth.
Kinda have my eye on the Kia Sportage at the moment.
Sorry, Honda.
“And [the doctors] would be just real passive aggressive, [asking] me, ‘Are you using the things we're giving you? Are you doing the steps they were telling you to take?’ And I'm like, ‘I am. Something is wrong with my baby.’” -Dameyonna Willis
