Over the weekend, Portsmouth have been encouraging supporters to check in on one another, with local Mind teams available before kick-off for a confidential chat.

The message feels especially poignant following Alan Knight’s passing after his battle with cancer. The Pompey legend had spoken openly about his struggles with depression and how getting support helped him rebuild his life.

I’ve spent enough time in dressing rooms to know you can share a laugh with someone every day without knowing what they’re going home to.

The same goes for the supporter you’ve sat beside for years. You might know exactly what they think of the manager, but very little about how they’re actually doing.

Ask how they are. And give them time to tell you.

The Irish Famine was not a talking point. It was a catastrophe.

Between 1845 and 1852 the potato crop failed year after year. A million people died of starvation and disease. Another million and more fled. Families walked to the ports with nothing. They boarded coffin ships.

They arrived in Glasgow, Liverpool and the slums of industrial Britain already half-dead, then took the jobs no one else wanted and lived in conditions that would now be called inhumane.

That is the Irish movement of people the leaflet wants to hijack. Starving neighbours from the next island, part of the same state, fleeing a blight and a relief system that failed them. They did not come with legal claims drafted in advance. They came because the alternative was death.

To flatten that history into “same as today’s asylum numbers” is not anti-racism. It is theft.

It uses the dead and the destitute of An Gorta Mór as a prop.

The Irish earned their place through work, intermarriage and generations of staying. Pretending the two stories are interchangeable insults the people who actually lived it.

Judge the man, not the slogan. Do not conscript the Famine.
