I sat on a grand jury once. We had a case: father with wife and kids in tow went to a national park and upon going through the security screening, the National Park Service found he had a handgun in his backpack. He claimed he forgot that it was in there. He was from a state with very lax gun laws. The DA didn't press us to indict. He also didn't press us to no bill. I argued to the jurors that it seemed like an honest mistake--he was with his family. Why should we indict and run this family guy through the criminal courts for a simple mistake? The asshole jurors, who could scarcely understand even the most elementary concepts of the application of law, CLUNG DESPERATELY to their erroneous anecdotal knowledge of gun law. They argued it was illegal for this man to even be carrying a gun in his backpack in the state he was from. Turns out he had every right in his home state. It was illegal in the state we were in. They held to the letter of the law and outvoted me and a few others--That man was indicted for unlawful possession of a firearm and his life was probably ruined. I have no faith in the legal system that judges you by a "jury of your peers" they're fucking idiots--even when they had the power to no bill.
