you can’t save a spot for everyone when it comes to your growth. as much as you may want to accommodate everyone, it’s too heavy on your spirit, too wearing. some people will seamlessly merge in the direction you’re heading in, others will have to work on themselves to reach you.
I cut off a friend recently and I just realized everytime I talked to her she gave me this sick feeling in my stomach.
Y'all listen to your intuition the first time please. People do not be well
Black Historical Tea:
When James Baldwin & Richard Wright Almost Fought (And Tore Up a Parisian Cafe)
In 1949, a young Jimmy Baldwin published a scathing review of Richard Wright's novel "Native Son" in an essay he entitled "Everybody's Protest Novel." When Wright read the essay, he became enraged and decided to physically roll up on Baldwin (in person) at the trendy Parisian Cafe Les Deux Magots--where the two men were frequent patrons. Wright and Baldwin had previously had a friendly mentorship/mentee relationship---Wright was 40, Baldwin was 25.
Baldwin---who had a few drinks--essentially told Wright, "don't come for me, unless I send for you." Wright (who was the reigning OG of black literature at the time) warned Jimmy to stay in his place or the two of them were gonna have a "problem."
That didn't go well.
What happened next is one of the greatest Love & Hip Hop-level brawls in black literary history: Wright started swinging, Jimmy started cussin, tables started flying--and the novelist Chester Himes was the only person strong enough to physically subdue the two men.
In the years to come, James Baldwin would go on to become one of the most important voices in American literature. Richard Wright maintained his status as one of the most influential writers in American history.
But the two men would never speak to each other again.
