Talent is Overrated.
Bill Belichick said it best:
"It's not all about talent. It's about dependability, consistency, and being able to improve. If you work hard and you're coachable, and you understand what you need to do, you can improve."
The best teams aren’t just built on talent.
They’re built on players who show up every day, do their job, and get better over time.
✅ Dependability – Can your team count on you?
✅ Consistency – Do you bring it every day?
✅ Coachability – Are you willing to learn and adjust?
The most successful athletes and leaders aren’t always the most talented.
They’re the ones who keep improving.
Be that player.
Immature Athletes:
*Work hard when they want
*Take everything personally
*Don’t respond well to adversity
*Know everything
*Are too good to do the little things
*Blame others (officials, teammates, opponents, coaches)
Mature Athletes:
*Are consistent in their effort
*Embrace being coached
*Care about their teammates
*Look in the mirror first
*Know their role
*See the big picture
PLAYERS: You don’t inspire your teammates by showing them how amazing YOU are. You inspire your teammates by helping them see how amazing THEY are and can be.
RECRUITS - This is crucial. Was watching a game yesterday, kid had a nice game, could score it, defend. She made a real nice play...then messed it up by flexing on her opponent, right in her face. So, thanks but no thanks. Respect y'all, respect. #sportsmanship
The most dedicated athletes I come across never talk about how dedicated they are, how hard they work or what they sacrifice. They just show up every single day & give their very best. It’s not a hardship, not a chore. They WANT to do whatever it takes, & then some, to succeed!
Very sad to watch some kids playing their hearts out to win & others only playing for themselves. Team sports are TEAM sports for a reason. If you’re not there to give everything to your team, you’re there for the wrong reasons. Individual notoriety has no place in team sports!
PLAYERS: The best teammates find ways to make their teammates look good instead of calling attention to themselves and seeking the spotlight. You don't have to think less of yourself, but rather just think of yourself less. Great teammates make others better.
Loved getting to watch @CamSchmidt08 and @JaciOdom32 today at the Border War in Springdale. Both girls came away with wins! Representing @vbladypointers well.
PLAYERS: When you become a "whatever the team needs" type player then you become a great teammate. This also makes your team's culture stronger. Great teams have great teammates.
This past Friday, @KrishaMyers and Kevin Clifton Real Estate Inc. were recognized as our Pointer Premier Game Sponsor of the Night!
Thank you for being so supportive of both our basketball programs!
